Aland Leland to demo square Ikebana turning tips June 13 |
At the June 13 meeting of the guild, member Alan Leland will turn a square Ikebana flower container.
Ikebana is the Japanese art of arranging cut stems, leaves, and flowers in special spiked-cup containers. The containers are sold as inserts for woodturning projects.
As usual the meeting begins at 7pm in the NCState CraftsCenter building and will include the demo, member gallery critique, raffle and club announcements.
As in most of his demonstrations, Alan will emphasize how he uses bowl gouges and a couple of specially made tools (3/8” HSS Square Skew/Box turning tool and 1/4” HSS round Point/Pyramid Tool) to turn a Gallery quality Square shaped Ikebana flower vessel.
The techniques that he will be using are the same skills he uses when turning any bowl or platter, especially turnings that are a combination of positive and negative space.

Volunteers still needed for June 15 Maker Faire |
WGNC will again have a booth at the annual Maker Faire on June 15 at the NC State Fairgrounds Kerr Scott Building. Last year's event drew hundreds of visitors to our booth.
Once again We are looking for several volunteers to take 90-minutes shifts to share/sell their work, demonstrate turning on a mini lathe, or simply greet visitors and answer questions about woodturning and the club. So far we only have 3.
The event runs from 10-5pm on Saturday June 15. If you are interested in participating, please sign up here.
Tables will be provided for you to display and sell your turnings and WGNC will have two club mini lathes set up with basic centers and a chuck for demonstrators. Sellers are asked to handle their own transactions and demonstrators should bring their own tools and wood.

Jimmy Clewes wows members & visitors with demo |
World-renown woodturner Jimmy Clewes performed in front of about 80 WGNC members and other visitors at the May 9 meeting, sharing his insights on the craft and demonstrating his amazing technique.
Clewes worked so quickly he had time to produce two distinct types of boxes in just under one and a half hours. IF you missed it, the session was captured on video that can be viewed here.
Following the demonstration, Clewes held three day-long workshops for paying members at Woodcraft in North Raleigh, just off Glenwood near Pleasant Valley.
As with the demo, Clewes ran the 9-5 sessions with no time to waste. Attendees were given two projects to complete in each of the three days, with Jimmy providing a brief but detailed demo then sending us off to work while he flitted from person to person, answering questions, checking technique, sharpening tools, generally advising and story-telling.
